His obituary reads in part:
Chesapeake, VA - Ralph "Freddie" Stewart, Jr, 56, of the 500 block of Rosewood Terrace, a Great Bridge auto mechanic who was active in Chesapeake politics, died Dec. 22, 1987, in his home. Mr Stewart, a native of old South Norfolk, was retired owner and operator of Freddie's Body Shop and Automotive Engineering Co. Inc. for 27 years. He also owned Super Bugs, Inc., a Volkswagen repair shop and was thought to be the first person in South Hampton Roads to build fiberglass dune buggies. He was one of the first custom-car builders in the area and also entered in national competitions. Family members said Mr. Stewart's interest in cars dated to his childhood."He grew up loving cars. If he couldn't buy a toy model, he would make one," said his wife, Hilda Williams Stewart. "He had a natural born talent for body work," said a son, Carroll Frederick Stewart of Chesapeake. Mr Stewart was active in Chesapeake politics, and in 1980 he started efforts in the city to reduce property taxes. In 1982, as a Democrat, he sought a seat on the City Council. His father, the late Ralph Frederick Stewart, Sr., was deputy high constable of Chesapeake and was secretary of the old Norfolk County Democratic Committee. Mr Stewart was a member of South Norfolk Church of Christ. In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia Elaine Clark of Chesapeake; three other sons, Ralph Frederick Stewart, III of Chesapeake, and Victor Lynn Stewart and James Walter Stewart, both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Barbara Knight of Chesapeake; and eight grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday in Gay & Oman Funeral Home Great Bridge Chapel, by the Rev. B.G. Campbell. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. (December 22. 1987)
