A memorial service was conducted at 7:30 PM Monday, in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. There was no public viewing or visitation. Englehard - Addie Lee Midgette McKinney, 75, died Friday night, August 14, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. Born in Hyde County on October 20, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John P. and Alice Benson Midgette. She was a member of the Engelhard Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Elbert Oliver McKinney; a son, Gary McKinney of Engelhard; three daughters: Linda M. Perry and Delores McKinney, both of Engelhard, and Diana M. Gutosky of Sterling Heights, Michigan; three sisters: Annie Pearl Payne and Louise Knickerbocker of Portsmouth, Va. and Sheila Gibbs of Engelhard; two grandchildren: Lisa Cuthrell and Tammy Gibbs; and four great-grandchildren: Justin Gibbs, Amanda Gibbs, Nicholas Cuthrell and Shane Cuthrell. Mrs. McKinney was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Leslie Midgette, John Small Midgette, Irene Jarvis, Allie Mae Gammon, Lydia Bell O'Neal and Ruby Quidley. Funeral services were held Monday at Engelhard Christian Church. Scott Sukeforth officiated. Burial was in Fulford Cemetery.

Roma McKinney Williams Chesapeake, VA - Roma Hilda McKinney Williams, 80 of the 700 block of Gainsborough Court, Chesapeake, VA, a retired saleswoman, died Nov. 12 1989, in a hospital. Mrs Williams, a native of Hyde Co., NC had retired from Ames & Brownley Dept. store. She was a member of South Norfolk Church of Christ. Mrs Williams was past president and current historian of Cambridge Square Senior Citizens Club; Great Bridge Senior Citizens Club; and former member of Indian River Senior Citizens Club. She was a former member of Rebekah's South Norfolk Chapter. She was a widow of Henry C. Williams. Survivors include four daughters, Hilda Stewart of Chesapeake, VA, Claudette Anderson and Bernice Davis both of Virginia Beach, VA; and Edna DeWald of Victoria, VA; a brother Romulus McKinney of Virginia Beach, VA; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday in South Norfolk Church of Christ, Chesapeake, V A, by the Rev. John Keane and the Rev. Ted Clifton. Burial was in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, VA. Friends joined the family at Francis A Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk, VA. November 12 1989

Roma married Henry Carroll Williams about 1932 in Hyde Co., North Carolina. Henry was born on 11 Jun 1905 in Hyde Co., North Carolina. He died on 20 Nov 1940 in Hyde Co., North Carolina. He was buried in Beulah Primitive Baptist Church Hyde Co., North Carolina.

His obituary reads in part: Hyde Co., NC - A tragic accident occurred Nov. 20, 1940 when Mr. Claudius Williams and his three sons, Henry Carroll, Hubert, and Lloyd, were out gathering corn with two wagons. They were using one wagon and had tied the reins of the other and left them. The horses became frightened and began to run. All three of the boys made and effort to stop them. In the struggle Henry Carroll was jerked down and run over and received such outward and inward bruises that he died about 7:00 PM that night. The accident took place before noon. Henry Carroll Williams was a good young man with a family consisting of a wife Roma Hilda McKinney Williams, and one child Hilda Williams. He was a member of the Disciple Church. Mr. Williams had a close call out on Swan Quarter Bay about 8 months ago when he spent a most bitter night out at sea. Interment was made in Fortesque Creek cemetery, Hyde Co., NC. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claudius Williams; one sister Mrs. Joy Carowan of Hyde Co., NC; two brothers, Hubert and Lloyd Williams of Hyde Co., NC Services were conducted by the undertaker, Mr. D.L. Berry. (November 20, 1940)

McKinney, both of Chesapeake; a sister, Thelma McKinney Baker of Lanha, MD; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was a member of Indian Creek Church of Christ, St. Brides, Hickory, Norfolk, Co., VA The body was removed to the Graham Funeral Home, Jackson and Jefferson Streets, South Norfolk, VA. Englehard - Ira Blount Gibbs, 80, of Route 1, died Friday, May 23, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. Born in Hyde County on December 22, 1916, he was the son of the late Seth Washington and Mary Brinn Gibbs. He was a retired sea captain for Allied Towing Company and was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Annie Allen Gibbs; a son, Jamie Lee Gibbs of Engelhard; three daughters: Sandra D. Gibbs of Cottageville, S.C., Sheila A. Robertson of Norfolk, Va., and Mary Ann A. Buchanan of Delangha, Georgia; a brother, Hallett W. Gibbs of Engelhard; two sisters: Madeline Bunch and Delma Russell, both of Belhaven; four grandchildren: Christopher Dale Land of Cottageville, S.C., Ronnie Rhodes of Norfolk, Va., Mark Buchanan and Loris Buchanan, both of Delangha, Ga. Ira married Annie Allen daughter of Joseph James Allen and Queenie Harrington. Annie was born on 31 Aug 1931 in Craven Co., North Carolina. She died on 8 Dec 1997 in Engelhard , Hyde Co., North Carolina.

Her obituary published in the The Coastland Times, Thursday, December 11, 1997 reads in part as follows:

Annie Ree Allen Gibbs, 66, of Route 1, died Monday, December 8, at her home. Born in Craven County on August 31, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Joseph James and Queenie Harrington Allen. She was the widow of Ira Blount Gibbs who died May 23, 1997. Mrs. Gibbs was a retired clerk and cashier at Farrow's Red and White Grocery in Engelhard. Surviving are a son, Jamie Lee Gibbs of the home; three daughters: Sandra D. Lane of Cottageville, S.C., Shelila Robertson of Portsmouth, Va., and Mary Ann Buchanan of Dehlonega, Ga.; a brother, Tommy Allen of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Janet Thompson of Lumberton; four grandchildren: Christopher Dale Lane of Cottageville, S.C., Ronnie Rhodes of Norfolk, Va., Mark Buchanan and Lori Krouse, both of Dehlonega, Ga. At her request, the body will be cremated and no services are planned.

Meatrice Gibbs, 83, died Friday at Cross Creek Health Care Center in Swan Quarter. A native of Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Verna Gibbs. She was married to Hallett Ward Gibbs and was a member of Engelhard Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Larry W. Gibbs of Manteo; two daughters: Norma G. Gibbs and Carolyn G. Williford, both of Engelhard; a brother, William James Gibbs of Columbia; two sisters: Wilma B. Carawan of Engelhard and Eunice G. Marslander of Belhaven; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by brothers: Verna Gray Gibbs, George Thomas Gibbs and Avery Gibbs, and a sister, Edna G. Payne. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Engelhard Baptist Church with the Rev. James Davenport officiating. Burial is to follow in Fulford Cemetery. Mrs. Ella Mae BRICKHOUSE, native of Swan Quarter, was fatally birned at her home in Hickory, Va. about noon Wednesday, August 23. Origin of the fire was not known but her husband, Matthew BRICKHOUSE, suspects her dress caught fire while she was starting a wood fire in preparation to cooking dinner. She died in a Norfolk hospital at 12:55 Friday, August 25. Funeral services for the 44-year old Hyde County woman were held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J.A. VANN of Hickory, Va.; three sons: Walter L. and Johnny M. BRICKHOUSE of Hickory, Va. and James E. BRICKHOUSE of the Merchant Marine service; one brother, J.H. BRICKHOUSE of Wilmington; one niece and one nephew. (Dare County Times - Friday, September 1, 1944; pg. 1)
