BELHAVEN - Mr. Walter Lee Blake, 69, of 84 Beach Road, Schrams Beach, Belhaven, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Blake was born Feb. 22, 1934, in Beaufort County. He was the son of the late Walter M. Blake and Nancy Jane Cuthrell Blake. On Jan. 7, 1959, he was married to the former Judith Ann Storm. Mr. Blake was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired sergeant first class with the N.C. Army National Guard. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with the Rev. David M. Pooser officiating. Members of the Kinston National Guard unit will serve as honorary pallbearers. Survivors include his wife, Judith Storm Blake; two daughters, Cindy Blake Briggs and husband, Ricky, of Kinston, and Crystal Blake Hardt and husband, Keith, of Washington; one son, Tracy Blake and wife, Kay, of Grifton; three sisters, Lois Blake Kowalski of Jacksonville, Bobbie Blake MawHinney of Jamesville, Wis., and Marion Blake Stotesberry of Pantego; two brothers, Marlin Rudolph Blake of Belhaven and Grady Blake of Pantego; and five grandchildren, Rachel Cromer, Ronnie Cromer, Houston Blake, Kristy Blake and Gunnar Hardt. He was preceded in death by one son, Anthony Troy Blake, and one brother, Elwood Andrew Blake. The family will join friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 U.S. 264 E., Washington, and at other times at the home. His obituary in the July 18, 2002 edition of the DailyAdvance reads in part:

Linwood Ray "Buddy" Pegram, age 50, of 908 Simpson Ditch Road, Elizabeth City, N.C., died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at his residence. Mr. Pegram was a native of Pasquotank County and the son of the late Lemmie Pegram and Mildred Kathleen Alexander Pegram. He was employed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, a U.S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam War and a member of the Wild Streak Band. Mr. Pegram is survived by a daughter, Katie Pegram of the residence; a son, Linwood "Woody" Pegram of the residence; three sisters, Emma East and husband, Joseph of Elizabeth City, N.C. and Elaine Pegram of Elizabeth City, N.C.; five nieces; one nephew; and several great-nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Friday, July 19, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Roland Cooper and the Rev. Johnny Ikner officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery.

Linwood married Joanna Lynne McPherson.

BARCO – Joseph Donald CARTER, 60, of Barco, died in Albemarle Hospital on Wednesday. He was a native of Wilmington and was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and was a member of the Rehoboth Baptist Church. He was the son of Joseph McDaniels CARTER of Wilmington and the late Geneva Thorp CARTER and husband of Thelma Mayo Armstrong CARTER of Barco. Besides his wife and father, surviving are four sons: James Donald CARTER of Virginia, Ernest Russell CARTER and Robert Wayne CARTER of Edenton and Billy Joe CARTER of Barco; one sister, Billie Jean PHILLIPS of Wilmington; one brother, Robert McDaniel CARTER of Chicago; and 5 grandchildren. A graveside service was scheduled for Saturday, March 2 at 10 a.m. in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Frank THIGPEN officiating with military rites at the grave. MAPLE - Timmy LeRoy NELSON, JR., age 36, of Moyock, NC, died Sunday, June 22, 2003, at his residence. Mr. NELSON, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the husband of Lorenda Armstrong NELSON of the residence and the son of Timmy LeRoy NELSON, SR., and Addie Louise Hanna NELSON of Maple, NC. He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church. Besides his wife and parents he is survived by a daughter, Candie Marie NELSON of the residence; a son, Matthew Lee NELSON of the residence; a sister, Paula Louise Nelson BRINKLEY of Grover, NC; and a brother, Richard Lionel NELSON of Norton, VA. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Rehoboth Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale PACE officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens.
