Col. Rhinehart, Haywood Native, dies at 64 Col. Carter L Rhinehart, 64, died at 8:45 PM, Tuesday in a Swannanoa veteran's hospital following a long illness. His home was at 148 Arthur Rd, Malvern Hills, West Asheville. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Mary I Pegram Rhinehart; two sons, Carter L Rhinehart, Jr., of Hendersonville, and Robert L Rhinehart of Burnsville; two brothers, Floyd Rhinehart of Canton, and Col. C K Rhinehart of Asheville; and two sisters, Mrs Roy Trammell of Canton, and Mrs. Bessie Robinson of Clyde. Funeral services were held at 3pm today in Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church. The Rev WW Preston and Capt. Deyo Williams officiated. Burial was in Bon-A-Venture Cemetery near Canton. Pigeon River Masonic Lodge 386 of Canton conducted Masonic rites at the grave. Active pallbearers were J Ben Patton, J Boyd Smathers, Gilbert Parris, Clyde Snyder, Carroll Singleton, and Wallace Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers were men of the Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church and Oldtimers of the Champion Paper and Fibre Company of Canton. Col. Rhinehart, a native of Haywood County, lived in Asheville for the past five years. He retired from the Air Force in 1946 and from Champion Paper and Fibre Co. Nov 1, 1949. At the time, he was assistant general secretary of Champion YMCA. Col. Rhinehart joined the traffic department of the company June 1, 1926, after serving with the Southern Railway. He was active with Champion until 1940 when he entered the Army as a captain with more than 27 years of National Guard and Regular Army Service. He was promoted to major in 1942, to lieutenant-colonel in 1943 and to full colonel in May 1946. His decorations included the Commendation Ribbon, for outstanding service in the organizing and training of communications workers on radar and radio equipment for the Air Technical Service Command. His final assignment on active duty was as commanding officer of the Signal Training Center 3 at Kelly Field near San Antonio, Texas. After leaving service, he joined Champion Y as assistant general secretary. He retired because of ill health. Wells Funeral Home in Canton was in charge of arrangements

Carter Lee “Bud” Rhinehart, Jr., age 80, died Friday, December 29, 2006, at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville.
He was a native of Haywood County and the son of the late Col. Carter Lee and Mrs. Mary Lucia Pegram Rhinehart of Canton. He was the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. Robert W. S. Pegram of Wilkes County and Canton and Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Rhinehart of Clyde. Dr. Pegram was a highly respected early twentieth century physician serving Canton and Haywood County for many years.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Rhinehart of Burnsville.
He graduated from Canton High School in 1943. In 1950 he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration from the Kenan Flagler School of Business at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving from 1944 to 1946 in the South Pacific and stationed on the island of Guam. His career included work at Glen Raven Mill in Burnsville, General Electric in Hendersonville and Champion International in Canton where he retired in 1988 as manager of the Production Control Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Canton where he was a former deacon, Sunday School teacher and member of various committees. He was a member of the Bishop Sunday School class. He had a great love for nature and the outdoors, and he especially enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking, boating and traveling both in the United States and abroad.
He was survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith Patton Rhinehart; sister-in-law, Matoka Rhinehart of Burnsville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Joyce Patton of Canton; two nephews and a niece.Carter married Judith Patton.
